“I’m fed up with drunken yobs beating the stuffing out of innocent members of the public.”
Christchurch District Court Judge Raoul Neave’s comment was directed at three young men who had admitted a street bashing after a drunken party bus incident.
The three had knocked a man unconscious and all admitted charges of assault with intent to injure at their appearance today.
Damien Mark McNeilly, 23, and Josiah Nathan Todd, 21, both of Barrington, and Ashley Richard John Corkin, a 19-year-old builder from Spreydon, were all ordered to do 100 hours of community work.
Each of them must pay $250 to the victim as emotional harm reparations.
The police said the incident happened on January 22 after an altercation on a party bus.
The parties in the confrontation were separated but as the bashing victim and his girlfriend were leaving they saw a friend being chased by the three.
When the victim intervened he was punched and kicked unconscious and had to spend the night in hospital.
The three attackers were drunk and were put in the detox cells at the police station.
“Mindless violence will not be tolerated,” said Judge Neave, imposing the sentences.
“Go away and don’t come back,” he told the trio.
